NASCAR Camping World Series East 2009 Schedule Announced

·         Season Will Open April 11 At Greenville-Pickens

·         12 Dates Cover 11 Tracks In Nine States

·         Third-Annual Combination Event With NCWS West At Iowa In May

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Dec. 24, 2008) – NASCAR announced today the schedule for the 23rd season of the NASCAR Camping World Series East, which will take the series to some of the top short-tracks on the East Coast.

The schedule features 12 dates at 11 different tracks across nine states.

"The 2009 NASCAR Camping World Series East calendar continues to feature key markets and top racetracks throughout the eastern United States," said George Silbermann, NASCAR managing director of racing operations. "The championship represents a challenging mixture of short tracks, road courses, speedways and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series companion events."

The NASCAR Camping World Series East will make its first appearance at Tri-County Motor Speedway in Hudson, N.C., on Saturday, April, 25. The .400-mile oval joined the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series last year.

For the fourth year in a row the NASCAR Camping World Series East season will open at Greenville-Pickens Speedway in Greenville, S.C. on Saturday, April 11. Rookie drivers have taken home the wins at the half-mile oval the last two seasons – Austin Dillon in 2008 and Joey Logano in 2007.

The NASCAR Camping World Series East will close out the 2009 schedule at Dover International Speedway on Friday, Sept. 25 during NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekend at the “Monster Mile.” Matt Kobyluck clinched his first NASCAR Camping World Series East title at Dover in 2008.

The schedule will once again be highlighted by the annual combination event between NASCAR’s top developmental series – the NASCAR Camping World Series East and West – at Iowa Speedway on May, 17. The race attracted NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers Kevin Harvick and Kasey Kahne in its first two editions, but was won by a NASCAR Camping World Series regular each year – Brian Ickler (2008) and Logano (2007).

A fixture on the NASCAR Camping World Series East schedule since the Loudon, N.H. track opened in 1990, New Hampshire Motor Speedway will once again be the site for a pair of races on NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekends. New England native Eddie MacDonald swept both NHMS races in 2008. The 2009 NASCAR Camping World Series East race dates are Friday, June 26 and Friday, Sept. 18.

Other 2009 highlights include:

·         The series returns to historic South Boston (Va.) Speedway for the third consecutive year with a Saturday, May 30 date. Kobyluck won the inaugural NASCAR Camping World Series East event at the .400 oval in 2007 and Brian Ickler is the defending race winner.

·         The series will return to the Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International for the 14th time on Saturday, June 6. There have been 10 different winners in 13 all-time races at 2.45-mile road course. The event will be part of a weekend of racing that includes the Grand-Am Rolex Sport Car Series.

·         Saturday, July 11 will see the NASCAR Camping World Series East return to Thompson (Conn.) International Speedway for the 26th time in series history. Trevor Bayne earned his first career victory at the .625-mile oval in 2008.

·         Music City Motorplex in Nashville, Tenn., will welcome back the NASCAR Camping World Series East for the third year in a row on Saturday, July 18. Kobyluck took home the guitar trophy in 2008 with his win on the .625-mile oval.

·         Adirondack International Speedway in Beaver Falls, N.Y., will play host to the NASCAR Camping World Series East for the eighth year in a row on Saturday, Aug. 1. Kobyluck has won three of the seven previous races at the half-mile oval, including last year.

·         The second road course race of the year will take place at Lime Rock Park on Saturday, Aug. 15 in Lakeville, Conn. Kobyluck, who swept both road course events in 2008, is the defending race winner at Lime Rock, a 1.53-mile course which has held 16 NASCAR Camping World Series East races since 1993.

Childress Named NASCAR Camping World Series East Director

Brings Nearly 20 Years Of Racing Experience To The Series

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Dec. 22, 2008) – Kip Childress has been named the NASCAR Camping World Series East Director.

As series director of the NASCAR Camping World Series East, Childress’ return to NASCAR will be with a series that has seen significant growth in popularity and national affiliation in recent years. Childress was an official with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series during its first five years of existence from 1995-2000.

“I’m very excited to rejoin the NASCAR family,” Childress said. “The NASCAR Camping World Series East is an excellent proving ground and I look forward to working with the teams and competitors.”

A third-generation NASCAR official, Childress has been associated with motorsports throughout his life. His grandfather, Gaither, served as Chief Steward at various tracks, including Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. His father, Lance, served in a number of capacities for NASCAR for two decades.

A resident of Lexington, N.C., Childress got his start with NASCAR as a NASCAR Whelen All-American Series official at Caraway Speedway in Asheboro, N.C. Childress, 38, also officiated at Tri-County Motor Speedway in Hudson, N.C., before joining the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series toward the end of its inaugural season in 1995.

In 2000, Childress stepped away from officiating, but worked within the motorsports industry until this appointment.

Childress replaces Les Westerfield, who served as interim series director in 2008. Westerfield will return to his previous position as race director for the NASCAR Camping World Series West.

SELLERS LOOKING FOR ONE MORE POSITION AT

NASCARTOYOTA ALL-STAR SHOWDOWN

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Dec. 8, 2008) – For Peyton Sellers, going back to the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown means going back to the basics.

Sellers, who ran the 2008 NASCAR Camping World Series East for car owner Andy Santerre, will head to the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale with his family-run team. They’re taking the same car that Sellers and Co. drove to a runner-up finish in the 2007 postseason ‘Daytona 500 of short-track racing.’

“I feel really good,” Sellers said. “Last year, the car was decent – don’t get me wrong – but I think we can make it a lot better. It’s going to be a good deal for us.”

Sellers joins the growing list of drivers that have confirmed their participation in the all-star event, including NASCAR Camping World Series champions Matt Kobyluck (East) and Eric Holmes (West), top Camping World East rookie Austin Dillon, and Camping World West standouts Jason Bowles, Jeff Barkshire, Todd Souza and Jason Fensler.

To secure his place on the list, Sellers raced his way in.

Sellers broke through into the win column in the final NASCAR Camping World Series East race of the season at Stafford (Conn.) Motor Speedway. The victory provided Sellers a secured spot in the starting lineup. Winners of NASCAR Camping World Series races and champions of NASCAR’s seven developmental series earn spots in the race.

“That helps a lot,” Sellers said. “It gives you a piece of mind going out there that we can unload and work on the race setup, and we don’t have to work on qualifying as much.”

Sellers drove his family-owned car in the NASCAR Camping World Series East in 2007, finishing third in points. They will be taking an Andy Santerre car as their backup to Irwindale.

“Everybody is coming back to help me with this race,” said Sellers of the No. 83 Chevrolet. “I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be a good time.”

Having run the half-mile track twice during the 2006 NASCAR Camping World Series West season and twice for the Showdown, Sellers is well acquainted with the multi-grooved, graduated banking of the state-of-the-art facility.

In the first West race in May of 2006, Sellers qualified third and led 49 laps. When the series returned in July, Sellers won the Coors Light Pole Award and led 19 laps. He qualified fifth and finished seventh in the 2006 NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown, and then qualified ninth last year en-route to his second-place showing.

He knows what improving that one vital spot would mean.

“It would be huge,” Sellers said. “It’s going to be pretty neat to go out there and showcase your talents. And it’s going to be great being able to go out there and race in the middle of winter when everybody else is sitting at home or snowed in.”

Sellers has help getting out to Irwindale.

For the race, Sellers will be sponsored by Jig-A-Loo, a silicon-based lubricant from Canada that is sold at major retailers, including Home Depot and Advance Auto. And he will again team with Skills USA, a non-profit skills-building organization that continues the stay-in-school theme that Sellers has promoted since his days racing a Late Model.

“This is taking it to the next level,” Sellers said.

And winning the biggest race of the season would take it even further.

Christopher will be crowned the 2008 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion at Mohegan Sun on Saturday, Dec. 13 at the series’ postseason banquet. Christopher registered four wins and 13 top 10s in 16 races to earn his first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour title this year in the No. 36 Al-Lee Installations Chevrolet owned by Edward Whelan. NCWS East Recap: Sellers Scores First Win at Stafford

STAFFORD SPRINGS, Conn. (October 12, 2008)
– Peyton Sellers emerged from a wild finish with his first career NASCAR Camping World Series East victory at Stafford Motor Speedway Sunday afternoon.

Sellers (No. 44 Casella Waste Systems Chevrolet) won a three-car, final-laps battle with Ted Christopher and Brian Ickler for the victory in the final race of the 2008 season. In the process, Sellers secured a starting position in the postseason NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown, scheduled for Jan. 23-24, 2009 at the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale (Calif.).

Ickler (No. 15 Ickler Motorsports Chevrolet) led the field on the final restart on lap 143, but spun into the infield on the restart. The race remained under green and Christopher  (No. 31 Ferguson Contractors/Coca-Cola Chevrolet), who had inherited the lead, appeared to be en route to the win. However, exiting Turn 4 on lap 149, Christopher backed off the gas for Ickler's car -- which was off the pace -- and Sellers made contact with Christopher. Sellers was able to recover and continue, while Christopher's disabled car brought out the yellow/checkered flag.

Ickler ended up in 18th, one lap down, while Christopher was scored 20th, two laps down. Ickler had won the Coors Light Pole Award in Saturday's qualifying and led a race-high 66 laps Sunday.

Dale Earnhardt, Inc. teammates Trevor Bayne (No. 1 Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet) and Jesus Hernandez (No. 11 DEI Chevrolet) finished second and third. Austin Dillon and Eddie MacDonald rounded out the top five.

Matt Kobyluck, who had already clinched his first NASCAR title in the second-to-last race of the season, capped off his championship season with a seventh-place finish.

Completing the top 10 were Woody Pitkat, Kobyluck, Jody Lavender, Jamie Hayes and Ricky Carmichael.

NCWS East Recap: Almirola Wins Dover Race; Kobyluck Wraps Up Title

DOVER, Del. (Sept. 19, 2008)
– Matt Kobyluck won his first NASCAR championship Friday at Dover International Speedway, while Aric Almirola earned the win in his first appearance in the NASCAR Camping World Series East.

Kobyluck, the 38-year-old driver from Uncasville, Conn., clinched the NASCAR Camping World Series East title with his third-place finish in the Sunoco 150. Kobyluck also became the first Native American to win a NASCAR Camping World Series championship. He is a member of the Mohegan Tribal Nation.

The 23-year-old Almirola, a Cuban-American, ran the No. 8 DEI Chevrolet as a one-race substitute for Jeffrey Earnhardt. Almirola will be running in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2009. Marc Davis, an 18-year-old African-American, finished third. Steve Park and Bobby Hamilton, Jr. rounded out the top five.

With one race remaining, Kobyluck holds a 219-point lead over second-place Austin Dillon. Dillon finished ninth.

In his 10th full season in the series, Kobyluck has finished in the top 10 each of the last six seasons. His previous best finish was a second-place in 2002, when he ended the season nine points behind champion Andy Santerre. Last year, Kobyluck finished fourth in points.

Kobyluck has a series-high four wins, along with nine top fives and 11 top 10s in 12 races.

The NASCAR Camping World Series East season concludes Sunday, Sept. 28 at Stafford (Conn.) Motor Speedway.

Kobyuck Wins At Adirondack For Second Straight NCWS East Victory

BEAVER FALLS, N.Y. (July 26, 2008)
 - Series veteran Matt Kobyluck got the best of development drivers Trevor Bayne and Austin Dillon in the late stages of Saturday's Edge Hotel 150 at Adirondack International Speedway to collect his second straight NASCAR Camping World Series East victory.

Kobyluck led just three laps in winning for the third time in six trips to the New York half-mile. His No. 40 Mohegan Sun Chevrolet was running third as Bayne and Dillon swapped the lead five times times between laps 113 and 130. Kobyluck got by Dillon, the 18-year-old Richard Childress Racing development driver, to grab second on a lap 136 restart. He then got the jump on Bayne, a 17-year-old Dale Earnhardt Inc. development driver, on a lap 148 restart. The race ended under caution following a multi-car accident in Turn 4 of the white-flag lap.

Bayne (No. 1 Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet Chevrolet) held on for second, followed by Dillon (No. 3 Garage Equipment Supply Chevrolet). Eddie MacDonald and Jeffrey Eanhardt rounded out the top five.

News & Notes: Adirondack’s ‘Quirks’ Suit Kobyluck Just Fine

By Paul Schaefer, NASCAR
July 23, 2008 - 4:01pm

The NASCAR Camping World Series East has a colorful history at one of the must unusual short tracks in the nation. The series returns to that track, Adirondack International Speedway in Beaver Falls, N.Y., Saturday, July 26, for it’s seventh appearance.

The track has multiple personalities … it’s part rock and roll, part deck shuffler, part equalizer and part road course.

The half-mile paved oval is irregularly circular with multiple subtle turns and not so subtle varying degrees of banking. The rock and roll comes from frequent beating and banging that the cars endure; the race’s deck can be shuffled by the slightest slip, which is a great equalizer in that not even the best drivers are able to drive 150 perfect laps there; and it has a road course personality in the subtle multiple turns within the circle.

It is no surprise that one of the most successful NASCAR Camping World Series East drivers over the past seven years has been Matt Kobyluck (No. 40 Mohegan Sun Chevrolet) — who has dominated on series road courses.

“It’s not your normal oval track, that’s for sure,” Kobyluck said. “You can’t really get up on the wheel there. The more you try, the more you slow down. You’re lacking grip and in a circle the whole time, and you have to finesse the car the whole time.

“Both corners are not the same. It’s kind of like a D-shape, but it’s in a circle the whole time.

“You’re never going to get as good as you want to be in Turns 1 and 2, because then you’ll be off in 3 and 4. And vise versa.”

Kobyluck quickly found success at the track, finishing second in the series’ first trip there in 2002. In six previous visits, the Connecticut driver has a pair of wins, four top fives and a Coors Light Pole Award. He was 10th there last year after leading a race-high 128 laps but was penalized for jumping a late-race restart.

“I just try to get in a rhythm there,” Kobyluck said. “That’s what you’ve got to do: Get in a rhythm there and not try to muscle the car around there.”

Adirondack comes at a perfect time for Kobyluck.

He is coming off a win at Music City Motorplex in Nashville, Tenn., last weekend to cut Austin Dillon’s point lead to 20. And, following Adirondack, the NASCAR Camping World Series East heads to Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Conn. Kobyluck already owns one road course win this season (Watkins Glen) and has two wins and a second in the last three trips to Lime Rock.

Kobyluck credits his experience and a strong team in the garage and on pit road with helping him keep pace with the NASCAR developmental teams. Last year, he was battling for the championship with Joe Gibbs Racing driver Joey Logano, and this year, he’s chasing Dillon, a Richard Childress Racing developmental driver.

“It’s one of those deals, if you go into the race with the concept where you’re going to gain all your points in one race, you’re generally not going to accomplish your goals,” Kobyluck said. “You have to try to finish the best you can and, throughout the race, you have to make smart decisions. It’s about executing your plan and taking advantage of the circumstances the best you can. And the points will take care of themselves.”

News & Notes

The Race …  This is the eighth event of a 13-race NASCAR Camping World Series East schedule for 2008.

The procedure … The starting field is 30 cars, including provisionals. Starting positions 1-26 will be determined by time trials. The four remaining spots will be determined through the provisional process. The race is scheduled for 150-laps (75 miles).

The Track … The half-mile track of Adirondack International Speedway is known as one of the most challenging and unique short-tracks in America. The oval is actually an irregularly shaped circle, with differing degrees of banking in almost every turn.

The records … The series one-lap qualifying record at Adirondack is 16.648 seconds (108.121 mph). The record for completing 150 laps was established in 2007 by Joey Logano, who completed the event in 1 hour, 8 minutes and 30 seconds, for an average speed of 85.694 mph.

The history … This year’s event is the eighth appearance of the series at Adirondack. Matt Kobyluck (No. 40 Mohegan Sun Chevrolet) is the  leading active race winner with two. He is tied with former driver and current team owner Andy Santerre, who won twice as a driver. Other previous winners include Joey Logano (2007) and Dale Quarterly (2003). Kobyluck, Kelly Moore, Ryan Moore and Martin Truex Jr. have each won AIS pole awards.

Arthur To Make NASCAR Debut At Home Track

Hometown fans at Adirondack International Speedway will have a local favorite to keep an eye on during Saturday’s Edge Hotel 150 presented by Casella Waste Systems.

Levi Arthur, 25, of Lyons Falls, N.Y., will make his first NASCAR Camping World Series East qualifying attempt. Arthur competed at the track from 2003-2006  and posted two feature wins, 15 top-fives and 41 top-10s.

A graduate of Hobart Williams Smith College in Geneva, N.Y., Arthur was a defensive end on his college football team, which won three USAA championships and made the NCAA playoffs twice. His car carries his college football number, 65.

The Arthur Racing Chevrolet is based on a Hopkins chassis and powered by a NASCAR-optional spec engine.

Last year’s event ...

Joey Logano only led one lap in picking up his fourth win of the season. Logano ducked underneath Bryon Chew as they dodged car on the track as they came out of Turn 4 coming to the checkered flag. The starting field was set by points because of weather. Matt Kobyluck led a race-high 149 laps but was black-flagged for jumping a late race restart and wound up 10th. Chew was penalized post-race for an infraction discovered during technical inspection and dropped to last in the race. This moved Sean Caisse up to second and Logano’s Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, Marc Davis, to third. Peyton Sellers and Eddie MacDonald rounded out the top five, with MacDonald also picking up the race’s Powerade Power Move of the Race Award after starting 21st. Ten rookies were part of the 26-car field.

Final notes from Nashville

Prime Position: Peyton Sellers (No. 44 E.J. Prescott/Castle Chevrolet) became the first driver to earn a second Coors Light Pole Award this season when he posted the fastest qualifying lap Saturday. Sellers also earned the Coors Light Pole Award in the season-opening race at Greenville-Pickens Speedway in Greenville, S.C. It was Sellers’ fifth career NASCAR Camping World Series pole. It was also the 13th Coors Light Pole over the last three years for Andy Santerre Motorsports.

Sellers Cleans Up: In addition to the Coors Light Pole Award, Sellers also earned the Aero Exhaust Lap Leader Award for leading the most laps (78) and the Featherlite Most Improved Driver Award. Sellers was coming off an 18th-place finish at Thompson (Conn.) International Speedway.

No repeat: The chance to repeat his 2007 magic for Rogelio Lopez (No. 03 Telmex/Lucas Oil Chevrolet) disappeared on Lap 20 when he spun in Turn 4 after contact by Sterling Marlin, which caused a six-car incident. Lopez wound up completing 99 laps and finishing 21st.

Not So Happy Homecoming: Former Music City Motorplex track champion and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Sterling Marlin (No. 95 Wide Open/Sadler Brothers Dodge) had a less-than-enjoyable return to his home track. The two-time Daytona 500 champion was sent to the rear for rough-riding following his incident with Lopez, and subsequently parked his car for the night on Lap 93 after receiving a pit-road penalty for an illegal tire change. Marlin finished 22nd.

Moving Up: Ricky Carmichael (No. 4 Monster Energy Drink Chevrolet) picked up the Powerade Power Move of the Race Award after starting 20th and finishing fourth.

Park Back On Course: After disappointing finishes at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and Thompson, Steve Park (No. 6 Waste Management Recycling America Chevrolet) earned a solid sixth. It was his fifth top 10 of the season and moved him back up to eighth in points.

Career Night: Five drivers posted their career-best finishes at Music City, led by Carmichael in fourth. Also with career nights were fifth-place Derek Thorn (No. 80 Paul Davis Restoration/ALS Ford), ninth-place Craig Goess (No. 2 Greenville Toyota/ESR Toyota), 14th-place Chase Mattioli (No. 27 Liquid Fence Ford), and 27th-place Daniel Pope III (No. 10 D&D Repair/TJ’s Antiques Dodge).

In addition, Sellers, 10th-place Max Dumarey (No. 16 Bodycoach.net Chevrolet) and 11th-place Dustin Delaney (No. 39 Carsunder10k.com/Delaney Energy Chevrolet) matched their best NASCAR Camping World Series East finishes.

Swapping The Lead: The 12 lead changes tied for second most on the season, matching the dozen at South Boston (Va.) Speedway May 31. The combination event with the NASCAR Camping World Series West at Iowa Speedway May 18 featured 13 lead changes.

Bayne Scores First Win In DEI Duel

THOMPSON, Conn.
– Seventeen-year-old Dale Earnhardt, Inc. development driver Trevor Bayne from Knoxville, Tenn. scored his first career NASCAR Camping World Series East victory Saturday night at Thompson International Speedway. The win came in Bayne’s sixth career start.

Bayne took the lead from DEI teammate Jesus Hernandez on a lap 97 restart and won by a car length. Hernandez finished second followed by veteran Brad Leighton, Marc Davis and Jeffrey Earnhardt in a third DEI Chevrolet. Bayne and Hernandez swapped the lead five times over the second half of the race.

“It was a great race for a great organization,” Bayne said of the three teammates placing in the top-five together for the third time this year. “Our cars were equal,” Bayne added about the final shootout with Hernandez. “I had the preferred outside line on the final restart, and everything just fell into place.”

The win topped off a huge day for Bayne, who earlier won his first career Coor’s Light Pole Award for the event.

Shadowed by Bayne, Hernandez took the lead on a lap 38 restart. The two waged a close-quarters battle for the win. On the race’s final restart with three laps to go, Bayne took the lead, and won the three-lap sprint to the finish.

Jody Lavender finished sixth, followed by Matt Kobyluck, Rogelio Lopez, Austin Dillon and Jeff Anton.

MacDonald Takes NCWS East Checkered Flag at New Hampshire

NASCAR Camping World Series East Veteran Earns Fourth Career Victory

LOUDON, N.H. (June 27, 2008) - Eddie MacDonald reached Victory Lane for the first time in 16 NASCAR Camping World Series East career starts at New Hampshire Motor Speedway Friday evening in the Heluva Good! Summer 125.

MacDonald (No. 71 Grimm Construction/NEMO Chevrolet) and Trevor Bayne (No. 1 Dale Earnhadt Chevrolet) traded the lead several times down the stretch before the final caution came out on lap 122. On the ensuing restart MacDonald got the jump on Bayne to pull away for the win by half a second.

"This is just awesome," MacDonald said. "The one goal we had this year was to win Loudon, and we got it."

The victory for MacDonald was the fourth of his NASCAR Camping World Series East career. A native of Rowley, Mass., his previous best career finish at New Hampshire was seventh in 2004. His last trip to Victory Lane was on June 18, 2007 at Stafford (Conn.) Motor Speedway.

"We've led a lot of laps here," MacDonald said, "but never seemed to be able to finish it off."

Bayne, a rookie, wound up as the runner-up, followed by Matt Kobyluck. It was the best career finish for Bayne, who had been third twice. Kobyluck tied his best New Hampshire finish in his 25th start at the 1.058-mile oval.

Rookies Austin Dillon and Ricky Carmichael registered top-five finishes in their first race at New Hampshire.

Marc Davis, Mike Olsen, John Salemi, Brad Leighton and Brian Ickler rounded out the top 10.

The NASCAR Camping World Series East will return to New England for the sixth race of the 2008 season on Saturday, July 12 at Thompson (Conn.) International Speedway.

News & Notes: Kobyluck, MacDonald hitting their stride at the perfect time

By Paul Schaefer, NASCAR
July 9, 2008 - 9:17am

The NASCAR Camping World Series East has evolved into a development series for talented young drivers. But it’s still a great place for experienced veterans.

In a series that produced a 17-year-old champion last year and an 18-year-old point leader this season, Matt Kobyluck, 38, and Eddie MacDonald, 28, are more than holding their own.

Kobyluck (No. 40 Mohegan Sun Resort Chevrolet), will make his 150th career start Saturday at Thompson (Conn.) International Speedway. MacDonald (No. 71 Grimm Construction C h e v r olet), makes start number 102. The duo enter Satur d a y ’ s Pepsi Full F e n d e r Frenzy 100 h a v i n g won the previous two races.

Kobyluck won the NASCAR Camping World East 125 at the famed 2.450-mile Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International road course on June 8, while MacDonald won the Heluva Good! 125 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, the 1.058-mile superspeedway in Loudon, N.H.

Each have won on Thompson’s venerable .625-mile banked oval — Kobyluck in 2006 and MacDonald in 2005.

“The biggest hurdle at Thompson was finding the right combination for what works there and then having some luck on the race track,” said Kobyluck, who enters the race just 48 points behind leader Austin Dillon.

“We had been building our Thompson program. We didn't win that race by accident.. We had a dominant car and we should have won that event. It turned out, as luck would have it, we did.”

Last season, Kobyluck and MacDonald arrived at Thompson having won the previous two races, with Kobyluck’s win at South Boston (Va,) Speedway followed by MacDonald’s win in race five at Stafford (Conn.) Motor Speedway.

At Thompson last year, Kobyluck qualified 12th and finished second to Sean Caisse, while Mac- Donald qualified third and finished 16th after a late race spin.

Kobyluck has been the series’ leading road course performer at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut between 2005-2007, when it was on hiatus from Watkins Glen. During those three seasons, at Lime Rock, Kobyluck won all three poles, posted two wins and a second-place finish.

“A win at Watkins Glen is what I felt like would classify me as a top-notch road racer,” Kobyluck said. “It’s another thing to go to Watkins Glen and win. I was able to back up what I’ve been able to do the last three years at Lime Rock.

When they arrived at New Hampshire, MacDonald was looking to rebound from a 27th-place finish at Watkins Glen, while Kobyluck was looking to improve his rocky relationship with Lady Luck at New Hampshire.

In 24 previous career starts there, Kobyluck had only three top-fives and six top-10 finishes. A third-place outcome was fine with him, especially when it vaulted him from fourth to second in points.

The driver, crew chief Rollie Lachance and team owner Rob Grimm realized the potential of their combination by winning at New Hampshire.

For MacDonald, his New Hampshire win was the fourth — and biggest — of his career. With 16 New Hampshire starts behind him adding up to an average finish of 37th, his win was a dream come true.

“We were fast right from the start so I knew if we just ran our race, we would be there at the end,” MacDonald said. “Our entire team is made up of volunteers, so this win is all the sweeter.”

Ironically, MacDonald’s first race with Lachance came last year at Thompson.

Thompson And NASCAR Share Long History

Thompson International Speedway and NASCAR share a long history together. The track, founded by John Hoenig, hosted its first race in 1940, and was already in operation for eight years when NASCAR was established in 1948.

A decades-long host of NASCAR Whelen All American Series racing, Thompson has helped produce NASCAR stars for generations. The track’s featured division is the Sunoco

Modifieds. In 2001, Ted Christopher of Plainville, Conn., won the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national championship running at Thompson. Woody Pitkat finished second in the nation in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series last year racing at Thompson and Stafford (Conn.) Motor Speedway. And Keith Rocco, Thompson’s defending Sunoco Modified champion, currently leads the nation while also running at Stafford (Conn.) Motor Speedway and the New Waterford (Conn.) Speedbowl.

Thompson’s weekly Thursday night program also includes Late Models, Pro Stocks, Thompson Modifieds, Limited Sportsman and Mini Stocks.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series also raced at Thompson three times, in 1951 (winner: Neil Cole), 1969 (David Pearson) and 1970 (Bobby Isaac).

Kobyluck Aces Overtime Watkins Glen Shootout

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (June 8, 2008)
– Matt Kobyluck won his first NASCAR Camping World Series East race at Watkins Glen International Sunday afternoon.

Kobyluck (No. 40 Mohegan Sun Chevrolet) led the final two laps in the series first trip to The Glen since 2004. Kobyluck’s previous best finish at the 2.45-mile road course was fourth.

A green-white-checkered finish necessitated by a late-race blown engine and stretched the race from its scheduled 51 laps to 55.

Marc Davis (No. 18 Slim Jim Toyota) led a total of 32 laps of the event and led the field to its final restart.

Kobyluck’s No. 40 Mohegan Sun Resort Chevrolet was fastest in responding to the green flag. Third-place Antonio Perez (No.12 Chivas Racing/Telmex Dodge) joined the fray between the start-finish line and turn one, and all three cars made contact. Kobyluck led the field into Turn 1, while both Davis and Perez limped their damaged cars around the circuit. Perez, who won the Coors Light Pole Award, finished 10th and Davis finished 13th.

Pouncing on the opportunity, a trio of Dale Earnhardt, Inc. Chevrolets pushed Kobyluck for the win until a caution flag came out on the last lap.

The victory at The Glen also earned Kobyluck a secured spot in the postseason NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown, scheduled for Jan. 24-25, 2009.

Jeffrey Earnhardt (No. 8 Dale Earnhardt Foundation Chevrolet) finished second, followed by Trevor Bayne (No. 1 Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet Chevrolet), and Jesus Hernandez (No. 11 DEI Chevrolet). Steve Park (No. 35 Waste Management/Recycle America Dodge) finished fifth.

Completing the top-10 were Bryon Chew, Jason Holehouse, Tim Cowen, Ricky Carmichael and Perez.

Points leader Austin Dillon was 12th, while second-place Brian Ickler suffered mechanical problems and finished 24th. Dillon leads Ickler by 55, Park by 57 and Kobyluck by 63.

Perez A Record Setter At Watkins Glen

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (June 7, 2008)
– Record-setter Antonio Perez of Guadalajara, Mexico led an international field in NASCAR Camping World Series East qualifying Saturday at Watkins Glen International.

Perez, making his first NASCAR Camping World Series East start of the year, set a new series qualifying record of 1:14.223 (118.831). The old record was set in 2002 by Dale Quarterly at 1:14.363 (118.607 mph).

Perez took only one lap in his qualifying group’s six-minute session, and with a slip in lap two, parked the his No. 21 Chivas Racing/GPOS Footprints Dodge. “The car is good. I was trying too hard, so I only did one lap,” he said. “I pushed too hard on my second lap,” he said of electing to pull from the track. The car is perfect for tomorrow.”

The series current road course racing “king,” Matt Kobyluck (No. 40 Mohegan Sun Resort Chevrolet) was second fastest and delighted about the series return to the famed 2.45-mile road course.

“I guess I’m not the “king” of qualifying anymore,” Kobyluck said with a grin. “It’s great to be back here. I’m just as happy to be on the front row. I want to get a victory here. I’m excited to be here.”

Max Dumarey of Gent, Belgium drove the No. 16 Bodycoach.net Dodge to the third-fastest time. The 19-year-old is a veteran of European road course racing.

“I think our guys did a good effort on the car, so I’m glad with it,” Dumarey said. “We’re going to do our best. It’s great to be here (at Watkins Glen) and it’s a great series.

Steve Park (No. 35 Waste Management/Recycle America Dodge) was the fourth fastest qualifier, and only driver in tomorrow’s field to have a NASCAR Sprint Cup win at Watkins Glen – his first – in 2000.

Completing the top-five qualifiers was Nick de Bruijn (No. 37 www.sprakerracing.com Chevrolet) of Vlaardingen, Holland. It is the 21-year-old’s first ever NASCAR start.

Filling out the top-10 qualifiers are Brian Ickler, Jeffrey Earnhardt, Marc Davis, Ricky Carmichael and Stan Silva. Series point leader Austin Dillon qualified 21st.

Ickler Makes It Two Straight With South Boston Win

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. (May 31, 2008)
 – Brian Ickler found the perfect place the short-track ‘big one’ – out front.

Ickler (No. 15 Ickler Motorsports Chevrolet) won his second straight NASCAR Camping World Series East race, leading nearly ever lap of the Strutmasters.com 150 at South Boston Speedway Saturday night.

“We worked so hard in the shop and have had such great cars,” said Ickler, who qualified second. “I’m just so proud to have another win for them and be here in Victory Lane at South Boston.”

The San Diego native also won the NASCAR Camping World Series combination race at Iowa Speedway May 18. He led 149 laps Saturday, conceding the front position only on a handful of restarts. Each time, he powered back into the lead and began to drive away from the field.

Andy Santerre Motorsports teammates Austin Dillon (No. 3 Garage Equipment Supply Chevrolet) and Peyton Sellers (No. 44 Danville Community College/Casella Chevrolet) finished second and third, respectively. Eddie MacDonald and last year’s race winner Matt Kobyluck rounded out the top five. The race was 155 laps and ended under caution on the white flag lap of a green-white-checkered finish.

Dillon maintained his points lead by 19 over Ickler.

“Second is a good points day,” Dillon said. “As a driver, you always want the win. I wish we could have. We just didn’t have enough at the end.”

Said Sellers: “We had a third-place car. I was in over my head the last couple laps trying to make something happen.”

“Anytime the No. 3 and 44 come to the track, you better be ready to race your heart out,” Ickler said. “We definitely had a good car for a couple laps. It turned into a great long run race car.

Ickler added that by getting out front, “we could use the whole racetrack the whole night.”

Others weren’t as fortunate.

A 16-car pileup in Turn 3 on lap 128 brought out a red flag for 29 minutes. Among those involved were Trevor Bayne and Bryon Chew, who were battling for third, and Coors Light Pole Award winner Ricky Carmichael, who was running 10th.

The race resumed on lap 134, and Dillon briefly jumped in front of Ickler before conceding the lead back. Dillon also got a run on the final restart but Ickler powered back.

“We had a good restart, but Brian did a good job coming right back,” said Dillon, who retained the points lead. “I couldn’t hold the bottom right there at the end. I probably could have but just didn’t get on the brakes enough.”

Jody Lavender, Jeffrey Earnhardt, Steve Park, Marc Davis and Rogelio Lopez completed the top 10. Steve Park moved into third in points with his finish, 85 behind Dillon and five ahead of fourth-place Davis.

During post race technical inspection, potential issues with the No. 15 car of Ickler were found. Additional information will be made available early next week.

Kobyluck Primed For South Boston, Watkins Glen
Sellers Clearly The Fan Favorite
Mattioli To Make Debut At His Home Track

The NASCAR Camping World Series East momentum builds as it rolls into South Boston Speedway Saturday, May 31. The classic .400-mile oval drew raves from the drivers and teams in 2007. The series was quickly accepted by the knowledgeable and enthusiastic south central Virginia fans.

The inaugural South Boston appearance for the series saw a classic battle between Connecticut’s Matt Kobyluck and Peyton Sellers of nearby Danville, Va. Sellers won the pole and the two traded the lead 11 times before Kobyluck emerged with the win.

Kobyluck will bring the same No. 40 Mohegan Sun Resort Chevrolet with which he won.

“Peyton and I had a great race together, swapping the lead back and fourth. We’re going to bring the same car and the same set-up, so hopefully we can get the same results,” Kobyluck said.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back to South Boston. It’s a fun track to run.

Sellers, meanwhile, will have a completely different setup. He competed last year in an independent, family-operated team. Sellers arrives this year with a major-league, two-car team operated by four-time series champion Andy Santerre. He also has a young teammate in Austin Dillon (No. 3 Garage Equipment Supply Chevrolet), who just happens to be leading the points after two races.

“Austin is definitely a great talent,” Sellers said. “He’s been fast every place we’ve been, so I hope we have a good dual between us.”

The two have each won a Coors Light Pole Award.

“Peyton is the King of South Boston,” Dillon said, “so he’s going to be tough for anyone to beat. At the same time, I can go to him any time I need him and its good having him there.”

“It feels good to be heading home.” Sellers said. “We travel a lot in 13 races, and I’m just really fortunate we get to go to my home track to race.”

News & Notes

The Race: This event is the second of 13 races on the NASCAR Camping World Series East schedule. It is the second consecutive year South Boston Speedway has hosted the series.

The Procedure: The starting field is 30 cars, including provisionals. The first 26 cars will qualify through two-lap time trials. The remaining four spots will be awarded through the provisional process. The race will be 150 laps (60.00 miles).

The Track: Over its 51-year history, South Boston Speedway hosted ten NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races between 1960 and 1971. Richard Petty scored five of his 200 wins there. Junior Johnson won twice. Single event winners were Rex White, Bobby Isaac and Benny Parsons, who won the final NNCS there over Petty. The track also hosted 35 NASCAR Nationwide Series events and three NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series events.

Competing For A Showdown Spot: NASCAR Camping World Series East race winners and NASCAR development series champions win guaranteed starting spots in the 2009 NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, Calif. Austin Dillon (Greenville-Pickens) and Brian Ickler (Iowa) have already clinched spots. The race date has been moved to January 23 and 24, 2009.

Carmichael Has A Fan & Friend In Kahne

One of the earliest mentions of NASCAR drivers as fans of Ricky Carmichael, considered the “Greatest Of All Time” AMA championship motorcycle racer, came in 2002. That’s when Clint Bowyer, a dirt track racing regional champion in NASCAR’s Whelen All American Series, cited Carmichael as one of his heroes.

It turns out the down-to-earth Carmichael has many other fans who compete in NASCAR racing, including NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Kasey Kahne.

“I would never have expected to be racing against Ricky,” Kahne said. “Now that he’s doing some stuff on four wheels – and I liked watching him race on two wheels – it’s great that he’s retired from that and started racing in NASCAR.”

Kahne, in his fifth season racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, has been friends with Carmichael for a number of years.

“Ricky’s a great guy,” Kahne said. “I met him in 2004 at the Daytona 500 when I as a rookie. It was my first Cup race. Ricky and his wife were walking around and I ran into them. We started talking and we’ve been friends ever since. We stayed in touch. We’ve gotten together a few times since and hung out. He’s just a really good guy and a really good person.”

Kahne qualified fourth in the US Cellular 200 Sunday, May 18 at Iowa Speedway and led 32 laps before finishing second to Brian Ickler. It was Kahne’s first NASCAR Camping World Series start and came less than 24 hours after he won the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Challenge in Charlotte.

Kahne met with the Iowa media following his Sunday morning practice. He was asked to compare the race cars he’s used to driving with the NASCAR Camping World Series cars.

“There’s not a whole lot of difference,” he said. “They’re more like a NASCAR Nationwide Series car. The tires are what changed the whole thing for me. I’ve never raced on a tire like this, a bias ply tire. It was really different in practice. It just took a few laps to figure out where the edge is and how far you can take the car. You have to get loose. You have to push the front end. You just have to mess with it and figure out where those lines are.”

Davis Graduates; Watkins Glen On Deck For East Drivers

Second-year NASCAR Camping World Series East driver Marc Davis graduated from high school – Mooresville Christian Academy – Saturday, May 24. On June 23, he’ll reach another milestone, age 18.

UP NEXT: The NASCAR Camping World Series East makes its return to the famed Watkins Glen International road course in New York June 8. The series has a long history at the 2.45-mile road course, having appeared there annually between 1993 and 2004.  No previous Watkins Glen race winner is currently competing on a full time basis in the series.

The series’ current road-course king is Matt Kobyluck. Kobyluck has two fourth-place finishes at The Glen, and three poles and two wins at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut.

Many Happy Returns To SoBo For Sellers

There is no mistaking Peyton Sellers’ place in South Boston race fans’ hearts.

During the series’ traditional “fan appreciation” autograph session on the front straightaway prior to last year’s race, even the media that travels with the series noted Sellers’ remarkably loyal fans.

It was the only autograph session where lines were longer to say hello to Sellers than for 2007 Most Popular Driver Award winner Jeffrey Earnhardt. Sellers is revered in Virginia in the same breaths that express pride in the many other stars from The Commonwealth, including Stacy Compton, the Sadlers, the Burtons and Denny Hamlin, among others.

Sellers won the 2005 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national championship competing at South Boston Speedway. That won the attention of Richard Childress Racing, who placed Sellers with Bill McAnally Racing in the NASCAR Camping World Series West as a developmental driver in 2006. Sellers won a race, finished fifth in points, and won the Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award.

Sellers joined the NASCAR Camping World Series East in 2007 with a one-car team fielded by his family.

The team finished third in East points with five top-fives and nine top-10s. Their effort at South Boston was their best of 2007. They won the pole, led a total of 101 laps and finished a close second to winner Matt Kobyluck.

Mattioli Set To Make Debut At His ‘Home’ Track

Chase Mattioli is plenty familiar with the track at which he is making his NASCAR Camping World Series debut. The 18-year-old has raced quarter-midgets at South Boston Speedway, which his family just happens to also own.

“I love South Boston,” Mattioli said. “It’s like a home away from home.”

Despite his roots — Chase’s grandfather, Dr. Joseph Mattioli, was the founder Pocono International Raceway, and his dad, Joseph Mattioli III, owns and operates Music City Motorplex — Chase Mattioli got his start racing in the Sports Car Club of America. He is making the transition to stock cars, having run two ARCA races and is scheduled to run five NASCAR Camping World Series East events.

“If you’re going to go to NASCAR, the Camping World Series is the way to go,” said Chase Mattioli. “I’m going to get a great experience racing against the best.”

In addition to racing, Mattioli is taking his final exams at Scranton Preparatory High School this week. He will be headed to Fordham University in the fall.

Danville’s Original NASCAR Star: Wendell Scott

Danville, Virginia’s first hometown NASCAR star was Wendell Scott, the first African-American driver to win in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. He began his career at the old Danville Speedway, a .375-mile banked dirt track. The track, just out of view from Highway 58, has been closed for decades, but its ruins include a clearly visible oval, a scale area, and wooden scoring box.

Revised Finish: JGR's Davis Stripped Of Runner-Up Finish At Iowa Speedway

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – NASCAR announced today that the unofficial results of Sunday’s NASCAR Camping World Series race at Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa have been revised due to a rules violations discovered during post-race inspection of the second place car – the No. 18 driven by Marc Davis.

The No. 18 car was found to be in violation of Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-Q (car, car parts, components and/or equipment used do not conform to NASCAR rules); 20C-8.4C (lubrication oil reservoir tank cover was not in place on the top of the lubrication oil reservoir tank encasement) and 20C-2.1O (any device or duct work that permits air to pass from one area of the interior of the car to another, or to the outside of the car, will not be permitted. This includes, but is not limited to, the inside of the car to the trunk area, or the floors, firewalls, crush panels and wheel wells passing air into or out of the car) of the 2008 NASCAR rule book. The violations was discovered during post race inspection on May 18.

The rule violations dropped Davis to 44th in the official race finish. All other drivers in the event moved up one position in the official finishing order. NASCAR has penalized Mike Sibley, crew chief of the No. 18 team as well. As a result, Sibley has been suspended from NASCAR until July 2, 2008, and placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31, 2008.

Short-track Education: Sellers Gives Teammate Dillon A Lesson On Restarts

By Jason Christley, NASCAR
April 19, 2008 - 8:45pm

Andy Santerre Motorsports Goes 1-2 At Greenville-Pickens

Greenville, S.C. – Peyton Sellers provided Austin Dillon lesson No. 1 in his NASCAR education. Sellers got the jump on his Andy Santerre Motorsports teammate on the final restart of the An American Revolution 150 presented by Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet and pulled away to win the NASCAR Camping World Series East opener Saturday night.

It was Dillon, the 17-year-old rookie and grandson of Richard Childress, who had the crowd on their feet as he led a majority of the race in the black No. 3 made famous by the late Dale Earnhardt driving for Childress. But it was Sellers who came from the back after scrapping the wall on lap 59, who ended up in Victory Lane. It was Sellers' first East victory and second NASCAR Camping World Series win overall. Earlier Saturday, Sellers picked up his first Coors Light Pole Award.

“Pressures off,” said Sellers. “I’m in the record books with a pole and a win. What more can you ask for?”

How about a 1-2 finish for two teammates in their first race with each other?

"It's our first run and that's awesome for Andy Santerre Motorsports," Dillon said. "I think we're going to have a great year. I already got one thing down: We got to lead laps and compete in the front. So now we just have to go out and win one."

With his parents and grandfather in attendance, Dillon conjured memories of last year's Greenville-Pickens race when then-rooke Joey Logano won his first NCWS East start. Ironically, it was the ASM No. 44 of Sean Caisse that finished second in that race. Driver changes in the offseason brought Dillon to Andy Santerre's shop under an RCR development deal. Sellers, who finished third in points in family-owned equipment, signed on late in the winter to fill the void in the No. 44.

The 24-year-old from Danville, Va., Sellers suffered brake issues that sent him bouncing and scraping off the backstretch wall while running fourth. He had to pit following his single-car caution and quickly picked his way back to the front.

“(Crew chief) H.C. (Sellers) was preachign to me, ‘Be patient, be patient, keep the tires on it, there’s still a long way to go,’ ” said Peyton Sellers. “With about 50 laps to go, I said, ‘Man, this thing might happen.’ To take a car that was just unbelievable and to fight back the way we did, it just doesn’t get any better.”

He finally retook the lead after he beat Dillon on the lap 128 restart. Dillon spun his tires as he came down the front stretch to the green, allowing Sellers to jump into the lead heading into turn 1. A spin on lap 146 set up a green-white-checkered finish and Sellers again beat his teammate on the restart.

“I told myself, I’ve been here too many times and I’ve lost too many races this way,” Sellers said. “If seat time means anything, it’s going to pay off right here.

“I just knew I had to make a good shift. I took off and there she goes.”

The race ended on lap 155 due to a multi-car pileup in the back of the field after the leaders took the white flag.

Joe Gibbs Racing development driver Marc Davis was third, followed by rookie Ben Stancill and Eddie MacDonald.

Rookie Ricky Carmichael was sixth, and Jody Lavender, Jamie Hayes, Steve Park and rookie Trevor Bayne rounded out the top 10.

Eleven cars made up the 30-car starting lineup and 39 drivers attempted to qualify for the NCWS East season opener.

Keeping Track Of The Field

Five Things To Watch in NCWS East

The new era of the NASCAR Camping World Series East kicks off Saturday with the Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet 150 at Greenville-Pickens, S.C. The upcoming season features a championship mix of series veterans and up-and-coming development drivers. Following are the top five stories to watch for the 2008 NASCAR Camping World Series East:

Matt Kobyluck

Kobyluck, 38, of Uncasville. Conn., has finished in the top-five of the NASCAR Camping World Series East championship points for three consecutive years (3rd, 2005; 5th 2006; 4th, 2007). Kobyluck’s Achilles heal in his championship quest has been New Hampshire Motor Speedway. His only top-10 finish there in the three most recent seasons has been a sixth place in June 2007. His other finishes during those years: 19th, 33rd, 35th, 40th and 33rd.

If Kobyluck can maintain his career pace of finishing in the top-five in nearly half the races he runs, and can convert the two NHMS events into top-fives this year, the Mohegan Sun Chevrolet driver could have his best chance yet to capture the elusive championship.

Marc Davis
The 17-year-old Davis, of Mitchellville, Maryland, has shifted teams within the Joe Gibbs Racing in 2008. With Gibbs moving Davis’ former stable-mate, 2007 series champion Joey Logano, to the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2008, Davis has been shifted into Logano’s entire championship winning team.

Davis finished ninth in the 2007 series points race and had a best finish of third twice. Davis is on course for his first career win, and maybe more.

Andy Santerre Motorsports
As a NASCAR Camping World Series East driver, Andy Santerre won four consecutive series championships, 2002-2005. His first title came as an owner-driver. Santerre retired from driving after the 2005 season and transitioned to full-time car owner. With driver Sean Caisse, ASM won seven races and finished second in points in 2006 and 2007. In 2007, Santerre expanded to two teams by adding Dale Earnhardt Inc. development driver Jeffrey Earnhardt, who finished fifth in series points.

For 2008, ASM has a completely new driver line up. Peyton Sellers takes over the No. 44 Casella Waste Systems Chevrolet. The 24-year-old Danville, Va., driver has a stout track record: 2005 NASCAR Whelen All American Series national champion and 2006 NASCAR Camping World Series West Sunoco Rookie of the Year. In 2007, the Sellers family fielded a single car for Peyton, used on the full schedule of short-tracks, intermediate tracks, superspeedways and a road course. Sellers finished third in series points and runner-up in October’s NASCAR Toyota All Star Showdown at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, Calif.

Also new to ASM is 17-year-old driver Austin Dillon of Lewisville, N.C. Dillon, the son of former driver Mike Dillon and grandson of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion car owner Richard Childress. Austin Dillon is a development driver for Richard Childress Racing and will carry the “classic” number three in the style that all NASCAR fans will recognize. Both drivers will have an opportunity to win in 2008.

New faces
Dillon isn’t the only driver new to the NASCAR Camping World Series East. With the lowered age-limit to 16 prior to last season, the series has cemented its role as the top development series for drivers looking to make the jump to the three NASCAR national series.

Leading the pack are 17-year-old DEI development driver Trevor Bayne and motorcross legend and Ken Schrader Racing driver Ricky Carmichael. Carmichael will team with second-year driver Jamie Hayes. Mexico’s Antonio Perez won the NASCAR Mexico Series rookie of the year in 2006 and was fifth in series points in 2007. The 22-year-old from Guadalajara will follow Ruben Pardo and Rogelio Lopez in making the move to the NASCAR Camping World Series East.

Among other notables are local and regional racing veteran Derek Thorn, 22, of Whitewater, Wisc.; ARCA driver A.J. Henriksen, 27, of Mooresville, N.C.; and dirt and pavement local and regional driver Dustin Delaney, 18, of Mayfield, N.Y. and Jody Lavender, 29, of Hartsville, S.C., driving for Jimmy Burgess Racing; Chase Mattioli, 18, of Long Pond, Pa., son of South Boston, Va., and Nashville, Tenn., track operator Joe Mattioli, Jr.

One of the other ‘new faces’ is familiar to NASCAR fans. NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Bobby Hamilton Jr., son of former NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion Bobby Hamilton, also plans to run the NASCAR Camping World Series East schedule.

Returning favorites
NASCAR national series veteran Steve Park, 40, of East Northport, N.Y., returns to the NASCAR Camping World Series East in 2008. Park has won in six NASCAR divisions: NASCAR Sprint Cup, NASCAR Nationwide, NASCAR Craftsman Truck, NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour where he has 16 wins, NASCAR Whelen All American Series, and NASCAR Camping World Series East. Park entered 11 NASCAR Camping World Series East races in 1996, and posted two wins, five top-fives and six top-10s. He entered one event in 2007, at Dover (Del.) International Speedway where he qualified 18th and finished eighth.

Eddie MacDonald waited until the fifth race of the NASCAR Camping World Series East to make his first start of a limited schedule and promptly won. The 27-year-old from Rowley, Mass. returns to full-time competition with team owner Robert Grimm and long-time crew chief Roland Lachance.

22nd NASCAR Camping World Series East Season Opens April 19

The NASCAR Camping World Series East  opens its 22nd season Saturday, April 19 at historic Greenville-Pickens Speedway in Greenville, S.C.  An exciting and unpredictably competitive season is forecast for the 13-event schedule, which takes the series to a dozen tracks in nine states.

The departure of 2007 series champion Joey Logano to the NASCAR Nationwide Series assures a first-time series champion in 2008. An outstanding rookie class is assembling. Determined veterans, meanwhile, are primed for a run at the championship. Other variables to monitor are new driver/team combinations and the performances of four NASCAR national series teams fielding efforts for seven drivers.

The championship race is wide-open.

Joe Gibbs Racing returns with a single-car team for second-year driver Marc Davis, 17, of Mitchellville, Maryland. Davis will drive Slim Jim Toyotas accompanied by team-mate Logano’s 2007 championship winning crew, including crew chief Scott Sibley. Davis finished ninth in series points last year, with four top-fives and six top-10 finishes.

Powerhouse team Andy Santerre Motorsports has a new driver lineup for his two Chevrolet teams.

Young star Peyton Sellers, 24, of Danville, Va., slides behind the wheel of ASM’s No. 44 Casella Waste Systems Chevrolet. That’s a huge change for Sellers, who used one modestly budgeted family-owned car for the entire 2007 season. Sellers finished third in the 2007 point race, and capped the season by finishing second to Logano in the 2007 NASCAR Toyota All Star Showdown.

Sellers has a notable rookie teammate at ASM. Austin Dillon, 17 of Lewisville, N.C., will drive the No. 3 Garage Equipment Supply Chevrolet as a Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award candidate. Dillon is the son of former NASCAR driver Mike Dillon and grandson of NASCAR championship team owner Richard Childress. Driver Dillon and Richard Childress Racing have partnered with Andy Santerre Motorsports in much the same way that Dale Earnhardt, Inc. partnered with ASM in 2007. DEI has taken its driver development program in-house for 2008.

DEI has assigned Jeffrey to its No. 8 Dale Earnhardt Foundation Chevrolet this year. Joining the DEI roster is Trevor Bayne, 17, of Knoxville, Tenn., who will drive the No. 1 Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet. Jesus Hernandez, 28, of Fresno, Calif.,   joined the team last year when his former Ginn team was acquired by DEI.

Another two-car team that will be followed closely is one owned by Hendrick Motorsports and fielded from Ken Schrader Racing’s stables. Jamie Hayes, who finished eighth in points last year, returns to the No. 52 Hendrick Chevrolet. Joining the effort will be rookie Ricky Carmichael, 28, of Clearwater, Fla. in the No. 4 Monster Energy Drink Chevrolet.

NASCAR national series veteran Steve Park, 40, of East Northport, N.Y., returns to the NASCAR Camping World Series East in 2008. Park is driving Robert Torrriere’s No. 35 Waste Management/Recycle America Chevrolet.

Park has won in six NASCAR divisions: NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (2), NASCAR Nationwide Series (3), NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (1), NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour (16), NASCAR Camping World Series East (2), as well as in the NASCAR Whelen All American Series weekly racing at Riverhead (N.Y.) Raceway.

This season marks the first Park has competed full-time in the NASCAR Camping World Series East. In 1996, he made 11 starts and posted two wins (New Hampshire Motor Speedway and Nazareth (Pa.) Speedway), five top-fives and six top-10s.

Tracks on the 2008 NASCAR Camping World Series schedule where Park has won include New Hampshire (NCWSE) 1996, (NWMT) 1994, 2 wins in 1995, 1996; Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International (NSCS, 2000); Music City Motorplex  (NNS, 2000); Thompson (Conn.) International Speedway (NWMT, 1991, 2 NWMT wins in 1995, 3 NWMT wins in 1996); and Stafford (Conn.) Motor Speedway (NWMT 1995).

To study NCWSE tracks at which he’s never competed, Park and team did pre-season testing at Greenville-Pickens and South Boston, Va.

News & Notes

The Race: This event is the first of 13 races on the NASCAR Camping World Series East schedule. It is the third consecutive year Greenville-Pickens Speedway has hosted the series season opening event.

The Procedure: The starting field is 30 cars, including provisionals. The first 26 cars will qualify through two-lap time trials. The remaining four spots will be awarded through the provisional process. The race will be 150 laps (75.00 miles).

The Track: Greenville-Pickens Speedway is observing its 63 season in 2008. It pre-dates the founding of NASCAR by three years. The .500-mile asphalt oval hosted 29 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events between 1951 and 1971. Richard Petty holds the most G-P wins with six. Petty won the final G-P NSCS race on June 26, 1971. Bobby Isaac won the April 10, 1971 200-lapper at G-P. It was the first NSCS race to be network broadcast live flag-to-flag by ABC Sports. The track also hosted a pair of NASCAR Nationwide Series events, won by Jack Ingram and Butch Lindley, in 1983. It also hosted four NASCAR Convertible Series events (1956-1959).

Competing For A Showdown Spot: NASCAR Camping World Series East race winners and NASCAR development series champions win guaranteed starting spots in the 2009 NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, Calif. All other entrants must race their way into the rich and prestigious event. The race date has been moved to January 23 and 24, 2009.

Ralph Earnhardt’s Legacy At Greenville-Pickens Speedway

Legendary Earnhardt family patriarch, Ralph Earnhardt, is honored in perpetuity at Greenville-Pickens Speedway. Earnhardt’s name appears on the speedway’s retaining wall, honoring his 1965 and 1966 track championships. He also won NASCAR Sportsman Division titles in 1956 and 1961.

East Trio Goes West for Phoenix Johnson Foundation 150

A trio of NASCAR Camping World Series East drivers made the long haul to Phoenix International Raceway to compete in one of their western brethren's marquee events.

In the end, 2007 NASCAR Camping World Series West champion Mike David won the April 11th Jimmie Johnson Foundation 150 at Phoenix. Nick Lynch was second followed by Jeff Jefferson, Brett Thompson and Jeff Barkshire.

But East drivers made their presence known.

Matt Kobyluck (No. 40 Mohegan Sun Resort Chevrolet) qualified 15th and finished tenth, rebounding from an unscheduled pit stop for tire replacement.

Marc Davis (No. 92 Slim Jim Toyota) qualified second-fastest and led four times for a total of 45 laps. He had a late race cut tire and finished 17th. Davis finished second in the 2007 version of the event.

Max Dumarey (No. 76 Bodycoach.net Chevrolet) qualified 11th-fastest for the 37-car field. He was involved in an accident on lap 105 and finished 27th.

Season’s First Race At Greenville-Pickens A Proven Barometer For Outcome Of Title Chase

A phenomenon has occurred since the NASCAR Camping World Series East began opening its season at Greenville-Pickens Speedway. The results of the series opener at the historic track have served as a barometer for the outcome of the season’s championship points race.

The series champion in both 2006 and 2007 opened the season with a top-five finish at Greenville.

In 2006, Sean Caisse won the 150-lap event over Brian Hoar, Mike Olsen, Matt Kobyluck, and Bryon Chew. All five made the top-five in the series final point standings. Olsen won the championship followed by Caisse, Chew, Hoar and Kobyluck.

In 2007, Joey Logano won the Greased Lightning 150 over Sean Caisse. At  season’s end, Logano also won the series championship over Caisse. Peyton Sellers finished fourth in the 2007 event, and took third in the final point standings.

Here’s another potential clue to the outcome of the 2008 championship: The Coors Light Pole Award. Both Olsen (2006) and Logano (2007) won the award as a prelude to their title.

On The Horizon: “The House That Rusty Built” In Iowa, “Peyton’s Place” In Virginia

The next three races on the NASCAR Camping World Series East schedule are highlighted by three diverse tracks.

Following the An American Revolution 150 presented by Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet at Greenville-Pickens Speedway, the series travels to Iowa Speedway, a high-banked intermediate sized .875-mile tri-oval in Newton, Iowa, for the US Cellular 200 on May 18;  and then to the .400-mile short-track of South Boston (Va.) Speedway for the Strutmasters.com 150 on May 31. After attracting a sellout crowd at the new track in 2007, the NASCAR Camping World Series East and West teams — not to mention the enthusiastic Iowa fans — have been anxious for the series’ return. The track was designed by 1989 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Rusty Wallace. The 200-lap race is a mid-continent NASCAR racing showcase. Last year’s event featured a spectacular race-long duel for supremacy between eventual winner Joey Logano and Daytona 500 champion Kevin Harvick. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Kasey Kahne has entered this year’s event.

The series then moves to South Boston, Va., for  a 150-lap May 31 event. Last year’s inaugural appearance produced a thrilling battle for the win between series veteran Matt Kobyluck and hometown hero Peyton Sellers from nearby Danville. Sellers won the pole for the event, and finished a close second to Kobyluck in the race. Sellers won the 2005 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national championship racing at South Boston Speedway. Sellers returns “home” this year driving for four-time series champion Andy Santerre, who also fields a car for Richard Childress Racing development driver Austin Dillon this year.

2008 Watch List: A Kobyluck Breakthrough At New Hampshire Could Bring Elusive Championship

One of the NASCAR Camping World Series East’s most popular drivers, Matt Kobyluck, has finished in the top-five of the series point race for three consecutive years (3rd, 2005; 5th, 2006;  and 4th, 2007).

Kobyluck, 38, of Uncasville, Conn., owner-driver of the No. 40 Mohegan Sun Chevrolet,  made his first NCWSE start at NHMS in 1998.

His racing relationship with the track has been contemptuous ever since. Despite being a 12-time series winner on short tracks, superspeedways and road courses, NHMS has been a frustrating spot on his schedule. He’s won a pole there in 2005, and has a best finish of third in 2002, but only three career top-five finishes.

This year, if Kobyluck can maintain his pace of at least two wins a year, finishing in the top-five in 50 percent of the races and in the top-10 in 75 percent of the races, and can convert the two NHMS starts into top-five finishes, Kobyluck could create his best chance yet  to capture the elusive series championship. The series is scheduled to appear at New Hampshire for 125-lap events on June 27 and September 12.

Comprehensive TV Coverage of NASCAR Camping World Series Continues On HDNet, SPEED

2008 television coverage of the NASCAR Camping World Series East begins with SPEED TV’s taping of the  April 19 Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet 150 at South Carolina’s Greenville-Pickens Speedway.

It is the first televised East event in a comprehensive television broadcast schedule for the NASCAR Camping World Series. Eight East events will include live coverage in high definition on HDNet and enhanced replays on SPEED.

Veteran announcer Mike Hogewood returns to call the action, with color commentary by Dan Pardus. They will be accompanied by Natalie Taylor, who will report on action from the pits.

High definition pioneer HDNet will telecast 16 races in 2008, continuing a partnership with NASCAR that began five years ago and provided the NASCAR Camping World Series with its first live television package.

HDNet coverage includes the first eight races of the NASCAR Camping World Series West season, as well as the season-finale Oct. 18 at the new Kern County track in Bakersfield, Calif.

The NASCAR Camping World Series East television  schedule on HDNet will pick up with the July 19 race at Music City Motorplex in Nashville and run through the final seven races of the season, culminating with the live broadcast at Stafford (Conn.) Motor Speedway Sept. 28.

HDNet’s broadcast schedule will also include the mid-season combination race between the East and the West at Iowa Speedway May 18.

In addition, SPEED’s enhanced replays will carry 24 races as part of its Racing Across America series, re-airing all 16 of HDNet’s live events while originally producing eight others.

SPEED will provide coverage of the NASCAR Camping World Series East opener at Greenville-Pickens Speedway in Greenville, S.C. on April 19. SPEED will also televise the NASCAR Camping World Series East races from South Boston (Va.) Speedway, Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International, and New Hampshire Motor Speedway, as well as the NASCAR Camping World Series West second race at Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway.

SPEED’s schedule also includes live coverage of the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown. The prestigious event, which has grown into the ‘Daytona 500 of short-track racing’ in just five short years, will be held Jan. 23-24, 2009 at Irwindale.

consecutive years (3rd, 2005; 5th, 2006; and 4th, 2007).

Kobyluck, 38, of Uncasville, Conn., owner-driver of the No. 40 Mohegan Sun
Chevrolet, made his first NCWSE start at NHMS in 1998.

His racing relationship with the track has been contemptuous ever since. Despite
being a 12-time series winner on short tracks, superspeedways and road courses,
NHMS has been a frustrating spot on his schedule. Hes won a pole there in 2005,
and has a best finish of third in 2002, but only three career top-five finishes.

This year, if Kobyluck can maintain his pace of at least two wins a year,
finishing in the top-five in 50 percent of the races and in the top-10 in 75
percent of the races, and can convert the two NHMS starts into top-five
finishes, Kobyluck could create his best chance yet to capture the elusive
series championship. The series is scheduled to appear at New Hampshire for
125-lap events on June 27 and September 12.

West Series Debut Ends In 27th Place Finish For Dumarey

Phoenix, AZ (April 12, 2008): A successful pit strategy and strong on-track position had hopes high for Max Dumarey and his Fadden Racing crew in the Jimmie Johnson Foundation 150 at Phoenix International Raceway, but things took a quick turn for the worse. Running in third place, Dumarey got loose coming out of turn four and hit the wall. The team ended their NASCAR Camping World Series West debut with a 27th place finish.

“I should have drove into the corner a little easier. The car wasn’t good enough and I was overdriving it,” he admitted. “It’s one of those things you just have to learn by experience, and then you learn it real quick. We didn’t have the car to win it, but I’m certain that we could have had a top-five.”

Thirty-eight cars took time for the event with Dumarey posting a speed of 126.489 mph in qualifying. The lap was 11th fastest.

“We were really confident with the set-up heading into the race, but between qualifying and race time the track tightened up quite a bit,” he said. “In the first 60 laps of the race, I was really tight in the middle.”

Dumarey pitted at lap 60 and took two right side tires. The team also made an adjustment to free up the car. The adjustment, however, was not enough. After the pit stop, Dumarey’s #76 Bodycoach.net Chevrolet was too free from the middle to the exit of the corner.

“We were still competitive,” said Dumarey. “I thought I could just drive through it. Our pit strategy had paid off, and I was sitting there with the leaders. I could run with them at first, but then I started to drop off just a little bit.”

Dumarey’s accident occurred 105 laps into the 150-lap event, and broke a brake fitting on the right front brake caliber.

“It’s a little disappointing,” said the Gent, Belgium-native. “But in looking at the big picture, I’m far ahead of where I was at this time last year. I have great equipment underneath me, and a great team supporting me. We’ll get there.”

The team will continue their 2008 schedule on Saturday, April 19th with the NASCAR Camping World Series East season opener at Greenville-Pickens Speedway. An American Revolution 150 presented by Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet will take the green flag at 8 PM ET.

Sellers To Drive No. 44 For Santerre

Peyton Sellers and Andy Santerre Motorsports announced today they will combine their talents and contend for a NASCAR Camping World Series East title for the 2008 season with sponsor Casella Waste Systems. The powerful union now pairs the top returning driver with the number one team.

The 2007 season was an impressive run for Peyton Sellers in the Camping World East Series. He finished third overall working out of his family’s shop and running a single car all season. Santerre identified with Sellers’ situation and was impressed with his accomplishments, having raced and won his first championship under similar circumstances. Santerre hand-picked Sellers to drive the No. 44 for ASM and Casella Waste Systems because he felt he deserved the opportunity, and knew he could get the job done.

“We’re excited to sign Peyton,” said Santerre. “With him aboard we’ll continue ASM’s tradition of being a front-running Championship contender. Peyton brings driving talent and a real knowledge of the racecar as well as an integrity and maturity not seen in someone his age at this level of competition. We’re really happy to have him aboard, and hope to graduate him to the next level of NASCAR racing with another Championship under his belt. Casella is used to winning races and running up front. We are thrilled to have a driver who is capable of continuing their winning tradition.”

Andy Santerre Motorsports is widely recognized as the most successful team in the NASCAR Camping World Series East. Led by four-time NASCAR Camping World Series East champion, Andy Santerre, ASM is known for its development of drivers for NASCAR’s three national series. Past drivers include Sean Caisse and DEI development driver, Jeffrey Earnhardt. In 2008, Sellers will be a teammate to Austin Dillon, grandson of Richard Childress and an RCR developmental driver.

“We’re thrilled”, said Sellers, the 2005 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion. “ASM is a great fit for us. Andy has a ton of experience and runs a first-class operation. The chemistry is already there and we have a mutual respect for one another.”

Sellers will be bringing several members of his existing team along with him, including his brother and noted crew chief, H.C. Sellers.

Casella Waste Systems, located in Rutland, VT, provides collection, transfer, disposal, recycling and resource management services to residential, industrial and commercial customers throughout the eastern United States. The company has committed to six of the series’ 13 races on the schedule, allowing room for a second sponsor to also tap the powerhouse combination of Sellers and Santerre. Sellers announced last year a cause-marketing partnership with SkillsUSA, a national student organization that supports technical education and skilled labor. This association will continue with ASM as well as Seller’s “Stay in School” theme.

The first race of the season is scheduled for Saturday, April 19 at Greenville-Pickens Speedway in Greenville, SC. The team will begin testing later this month in preparation.

LOGANO TO KICK OFF 2008 IN GRAND NATIONAL DIVISION

BEFORE HEADING TO NATIONWIDE SERIES

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 27, 2007) – Defending NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch East champion Joey Logano will return to NASCAR’s top developmental series to start the 2008 season before heading to the NASCAR Nationwide Series at the end of May.

Logano, 17, of Middletown, Conn., is expected to run NASCAR Grand National Division races until he turns 18 May 24. Eighteen is the minimum age for eligibility to enter events in NASCAR’s three national series. Joe Gibbs Racing announced Friday at Atlanta Motor Speedway that Logano will make his Nationwide Series debut at Dover International Speedway May 31.

Logano will finish the season running Nationwide Series events.

The minimum age for the NASCAR Grand National Division is 16. The schedules for the West Series and Busch East Series are expected in the upcoming weeks.

Logano was 16 when he won the first NASCAR Grand National Division event he competed in – the West Series race at Phoenix International Raceway in April. The same month, he began his Busch East Series championship season with his win at Greenville-Pickens (S.C.) Speedway. He went on to become the youngest NASCAR Busch East Series champion and the winningest rookie in series history. Logano scored five wins in 2007, and topped the season by winning the NASCAR Grand National Division’s 250-lap NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown at Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway on Oct. 20.

The youngest winner in NASCAR Nationwide Series history is Casey Atwood, who was 18 years, 10 months in age when he won at the Milwaukee (Wisc.) Mile on July 4, 1999. The youngest driver to win a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event is Kyle Busch (20 years, 18 days) in 2005. The youngest driver to win in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series is also Busch (20 years, 126 days) in 2005.

Logano Wins Busch East Championship

DOVER, Del. (Sept. 21) – Joey Logano (No. 20 Joe Gibbs Driven Chevrolet) finished second in the Sunoco 150 at Dover International Speedway Friday afternoon but became the NASCAR Busch East Series’ first rookie champion.

Sean Caisse (No. 44 Casella Waste Systems Chevrolet) took the race lead from Logano with just eight laps to go, and then withstood a final charge by Logano to win by a car length.

Pole winner Jeffrey Earnhardt (No. 1 Bass Pro Shops/Tracker Boats Chevrolet) gained new northern fans and turned heads with a contending run to finish third. It was the 18-year-old Earnhardt’s best finish of the season and his fourth top-five finish over the last six races of the season.

Jesus Hernandez (No. 4 Allstate Chevrolet) placed fourth, followed by Tim McCreadie (No. 31 Camping World/RVbank.com Chevrolet.)

By virtue of NASCAR’s lower age limit of 16 starting this year for its touring series, Logano is also the youngest champion of the series as well. Logano turned 17 on May 24. His base second-place prize money of $9,361 pushed his season race winnings to $100,786.

Logano, hired as a development driver by Joe Gibbs Racing for the 2007 season, revealed uncommon talent by leading the series point standings all but one week during the early season, and drove on to five wins and 10 top-five finishes in 13 races. That set a new record for races won by a rookie. The previous record was two-win seasons by three different rookie drivers.

Logano praised his teammates in sharing the title.

“My crew chief Mike Sibley is one of the greatest out there. Everyone on the team has worked so hard, and it paid off. Every time we went to the race track we had a chance to win. But there are ten teams who could win every single week. The NASCAR Busch East Series has great competition.”

Chase Austin (No. 99 HomeLife Dodge) posted his rookie season’s best finish of sixth followed by Marc Davis (No 92 WHUR 96.3 Chevrolet), Steve Park (No. 54 Waste Management/Recycle America Chevrolet), Peyton Sellers (No. 83 Strutmasters.com Chevrolet) and Max Dumarey (No. 16 Bodycoach.net) Chevrolet.

Logano Captures Fifth NASCAR Busch East Series Win of 2007

LOUDON, N.H. – (Sept. 14) Teenage rookie sensation Joey Logano won his fifth NASCAR Busch East Series race of the season Friday afternoon at New Hampshire International Speedway.

Logano, 17, of Middletown, Conn., took the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Driven Chevrolet to his second consecutive victory at the 1.058-mile superspeedway. He also led the most laps in the Aubuchon  Hardware 125 presented by Hardwarestore.com, which featured 10 lead changes among six drivers.

Logano took the lead for good with 10 laps to go from Mark McFarland (No. 81 Knights Companies Chevrolet). The two swapped the lead six times starting on lap 45 of the 125-lap race.  Inside the final five laps, McFarland scrapped the wall while battling with Sean Caisse (No. 44 Casella Waste Systems Chevrolet) and fell from contention.  Logano then held of Caisse for the win. Pole sitter Rogelio Lopez (No. 03 Telmex/Lucas Oil Chevrolet) finished third followed by Peyton Sellers (No. 83 Strutmasters.com  Chevrolet) and Jamie Hayes (No. 52 Hendrick Autoguard Chevrolet)

Jerry Marquis finished sixth followed by Brad Leighton, Ryan Moore, James Buescher, and Eddie MacDonald.

The series now heads to Dover (Del.) International Speedway for the season-ending Sunoco 150 Friday, Sept. 21 at 4:45 pm.

Caisse Outruns Kobyluck, Rain For Busch East Win At Mansfield

MANSFIELD, Ohio
– Sean Caisse scored his third NASCAR Busch East Series win of the season Saturday afternoon in the Mansfield 150 at Mansfield (Ohio) Motorsports Park.
The 21-year-old Caisse outran the constant pressure from the previous week’s winner Matt Kobyluck, right through the race’s final restart with three laps to go, and the looming threat of rain. Caisse (No. 44 Casella Waste Systems Chevrolet) won the Busch Pole Award for the inaugural event at the half-mile paved oval in 109.170 mph (16.488 seconds). He then led 136 laps.

Runner-up Kobyluck (No. 40 Mohegan Sun Chevrolet) was a constant presence, however, leaving the outcome in doubt until the finish. And showers ended up interrupting Caisse’s victory lane celebration.

Series point leader Joey Logano (No. 20 Joe Gibbs Driven Chevrolet) finished third, followed by Jerry Marquis (No. 35 Waste Management/Recycle America Chevrolet) and Jeffrey Earnhardt (No. 1 Bass Pro Shops/Tracker Boats Chevrolet). Completing the top 10 were Marc Davis, Peyton Sellers, Jamie Hayes, Bryon Chew and Belgian Max Dumarey, who posted his first top-10 finish of the season.

The NASCAR Busch East Series now heads to New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, N.H., for a 125-lap event on Friday, September 14.

Kobyluck Stays On Course For Busch East Win At Lime Rock

LAKEVILLE, Conn. (August 18, 2007)
– Mohegan Sun Chevrolet driver Matt Kobyluck of Uncasville, Conn., muscled his way to a spectacular victory in the Mohegan Sun 200 at Lime Rock Park, the NASCAR Busch East Series' only road course race of the season Saturday afternoon.

The 82-lap, 125.46-mile event was a short-track style affair was action packed with five full course cautions and intermittent “local” caution periods.

Kobyluck led 46 of the event’s 82 laps on the 1.53-mile road course including the final five. But in a fireworks finish, Kobyluck and second place running Mike Olsen hit a patch of oil and slid off track in turn seven – the last turn of the last lap. Kobyluck manhandled his car back on course to retain the lead and post a .258-second margin of victory over Sean Caisse (No. 44 Casella Waste Systems Chevrolet). Jeff Anton (No. 30 Baran Institute/Engineered Floors Chevrolet) placed a career-high third, followed by Jesus Hernandez (No. 4 Allstate Insurance/Ginn Resorts Chevrolet), and Jeffrey Earnhardt (No. 1 Menard’s/Pittsburgh Paints Chevrolet). Olsen, in second place entering the turn, recovered to finish ninth.

“When we hit the oil, I thought my day was done,” Kobyluck said. “There was no way around it and we were carrying so much speed, we were going to slide no matter what we did. I got off course, and somehow saved it from spinning out. My elbow hit the kill-switch, killed he ignition, and all I hear on he radio is my crew chief saying ‘go-go-go-go-go.’ Finally I got it going, grabbed a gear, and took off.”

Completing the top-10 were James Buescher, the event’s defending champion Ruben Pardo, Peyton Sellers, Olsen, and Larry Moloney.

Point leader Joey Logano spun and struck a safety tire carrier on lap 43. After repairs were made, he returned to the event to finish 23rd, eight laps down. Logano arrived at Lime Rock with a 188-point lead over Kobyluck. Kobyluck’s win sliced the point margin almost in half, with Logano departing with a 92-point lead.

The series now moves to Mansfield (Ohio) Motorsports Park for an inaugural twin-bill of 150 lap events with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Series Saturday, August. 25.

Late Move Pays Off For Logano At Adirondack

BEAVER FALLS, N.Y. (July 28)
– Joey Logano led an amazing final quarter-lap to take his fourth NASCAR Busch East Series win of the season at Adirondack International Speedway in Beaver Falls, N.Y. Saturday night.

Logano was fifth when the race restarted after the event’s seventh and final caution flag. After the restart, the race’s dominant leader, Matt Kobyluck, was assessed a penalty for jumping the green flag, dramatically altering the event’s outcome. Kobyluck then pitted on lap 146 and returned to the event without the possibility of winning.

Bryon Chew inherited the lead when Kobyluck made his penalty stop, heavily pressured by Sean Caisse, the event’s defending winner, and Logano.

On the final lap the leaders bunched as Rogelio Lopez spun to grass at the bottom of turn four. Unaware the leaders were about to overtake him, Lopez returned to the racing surface with Chew leading Logano and Caisse toward the checkered flag.

Logano (No. 20 Joe Gibbs Driven Chevrolet) dove to the low side of Chew in turn four, and squeezed through an opening between the charging car of Chew on his outside and the limping car of Lopez on the inside. Logano led from the exit of turn four to the finish line to snatch a seemingly impossible win.

Chew (No. 99 Buzz Chew Chevrolet) finished second in the sprint, followed by Caisse (No. 44 Casella Waste Management Chevrolet). Marc Davis (No. 18 Joe Gibbs Driver Chevrolet) finished fourth, followed by Peyton Sellers (No. 83 Strutmasters.com Chevrolet).

Completing the top 10 were Eddie MacDonald, Dion Ciccarelli, Chase Austin, Jerry Marquis, and James Pritchard, Jr.

Lopez Earns Historic Busch East Win At Music City

Nashville, Tenn. (July 22, 2007)
– Like most of his fellow drivers in the NASCAR Busch East Series, Rogelio Lopez hopes to one day run in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series. But he knows to get there, he has to have success on the various levels up the ladder.

Already the 2006 NASCAR Mexico champion, Lopez took a monumental step forward in his progress with a victory Sunday night in the Busch East Series’ Music City 150 at the historic Music City Motorplex. He became just the second Mexican-born driver to win in Busch East and the first to do so on an oval.

“This means a lot to me,” said Lopez, who held off series points leader Joey Logano on a green-white-checkered finish. “It’s not the same as winning on a road course. That’s what NASCAR means: oval courses.

“This means a lot to me and the Mexican guys.”

Ruben Pardo was the first Mexican-born driver to win on the Busch East with his victory last year on the road course at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut.

“I’m really happy about it,” said Lopez of Sunday’s win, “because we have worked so hard for three years to move up.”

Logano settled for the runner-up spot, while his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Marc Davis used a last-turn surge to edge Jeffrey Earnhardt for third. Bryon Chew finished fifth.

The victory earned Lopez, in his first year running full-time in the Busch East, an automatic spot in the starting lineup for the postseason NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown at Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway Oct. 19-20. It also gave him one of the most unique trophies in auto racing: a custom-designed Copley Guitar.

“I think I’m just going to hang it on the wall,” Lopez said. “Everyday I wake up, I’m just going to look at it hanging there.”

It was also a notable win for Lopez’s sponsor, Telmex. It was the Mexican telephone company’s first NASCAR victory as a sponsor.

Lopez’s previous best finish was a fourth overall at Elko (Minn.) Speedway.

He started the season with three straight top fives and was second in points after the fifth race of the season. A fire on lap 15 ended his race early at New Hampshire International Speedway, though, and he was 26th last week at Thompson.

“It was just a rough bunch of weeks,” said Fred Skaff, Lopez’s crew chief. “He’s matured unbelievably this year. Everybody put their heart and soul into it.

“He just did an awesome job.”

At Nashville, Lopez led twice for 40 laps, taking the lead for the final time from Jamie Hayes on lap 132. Logano moved past Hayes on a lap 138 restart. A caution two laps later slowed the field and several drivers began running low on fuel. A restart was aborted with five to go when several cars stalled on the track, setting up a two-lap dash for the win.

“I started shutting my motor off,” Logano said. “They told me to conserve fuel, I said ‘oh boy.’ … (On the restart), I grabbed fourth gear and it started sputtering and spitting.”

Jamie Hayes, Jeff Anton, Tim Andrews, Jerry Marquis and Richard Gould rounded out the top 10.

Misfortune for several of the top points leaders allowed Logano to stretch his lead to 147 points over second-place Matt Kobyluck, who finished 12th. Mike Olsen, who had entered the race second in points and 90 behind Logano, made contact with the wall on lap 23 after blowing a tire. He finished 30th and dropped back to third in points, trailing Logano by 147.

Peyton Sellers, fourth in points, led five laps early before also cutting a tire. He lost several laps in the pits and finished 16th. Sean Caisse, who won his fourth Busch Pole Award, got caught up in an early wreck while running in the top 10 and finished 18th.

Meanwhile, Lopez, who qualified 15th, steadily worked his way to the front.

“We were really easy on the tires at the beginning,” Lopez said, “and it paid back in the end.”

The Busch East Series will race Adirondack International Speedway in Beaver Falls, N.Y. next Saturday.

Caisse Breaks Slump With Win At Thompson

THOMPSON, Conn.
– Sean Caisse snapped a four-race slump to score his second NASCAR Busch East Series win of the season, leading all but two laps in the Pepsi Racing 100 Saturday night at Thompson International Speedway.

In the end, Caisse had to withstand pressure from runner-up Matt Kobyluck through two “overtime” restarts that extended the event to 108 laps. On the second attempt, the leaders took the white flag before a final incident  between Michelle Theriault and Jesus Hernandez brought the caution and checkered flags.

Kobyluck finished second followed by Mike Olsen, series points leader Joey Logano and Brad Leighton.

Caisse won his third pole of the season. Outside front row starter Marc Davis led Caisse by a fender at the completion of lap one, then slipped in turn 2 and dropped to fourth. He was later involved in multi-car incident and finished 28th. Kobyluck led one lap (92) pressuring Caisse on the restart late in the event.

James Buescher finished sixth followed by Ruben Pardo, Bryon Chew, Eric Holmes, and John Salemi.

The Busch East will race at the Music City Motorplex in Nashville, Tenn. Sunday, July 22.

Logano Continues To Dominate Busch East With Win At NHIS

LOUDON, N.H.
 – Brad Leighton's won eight times at New Hampshire International Speedway.

The only thing that came between him and No. 9 Friday was rookie phenom Joey Logano.

Logano, the 17-year-old Joe Gibbs Racing development driver, beat Leighton on a green-white-checkered finish for his fourth Grand National Division victory in eight starts. His third Busch East win of the season gives him a 100-point lead over defending series champion and second-place Mike Olsen.

Logano won the pole Thursday and led four times for 61 laps. He took the lead on lap 110 and quickly put more than a half second between him and Leighton. A pair of cautions – the last on lap 121 –  forced the race into overtime. On the final restart, NASCAR officials ruled Leighton went early and black flagged him. Rather than risk the disqualification, Leighton relinquished the spot to Logano and settled for second.

Tim Schendel, who started 26th, finished third. Landon Cassill, a Hendrick Motorsports development driver making his second Busch East start, was fourth and Brian Hoar finished fifth.

Matt Kobyluck, James Buescher, Ruben Pardo, Peyton Sellers and Jamie Hayes rounded out the top 10. Logano has 984 points. Olsen, who finished 11th, has 884 and Sellers has 864.

The Busch East races at Thompson (Conn.) International Speedway Saturday, July 14.

First Start Gives MacDonald Win At Stafford

Stafford Springs, Conn.
–  Former series regular Eddie MacDonald made his first NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch East Series start of the season Friday night. And he came away with his first victory since 2005.

MacDonald led the final 81 laps of the TSI Harley Davidson 150 at Stafford Motor Speedway. His win also earned him a secured starting spot in the postseason Toyota All-Star Challenge.

Defending Busch East champion Mike Olsen passed Matt Kobyluck with three laps to go take second, while Marc Davis and Bryon Chew were fourth and fifth respectively.

It was MacDonald’s third career Busch East win, with his most recent coming Oct. 30, 2005 at Thompson (Conn.) International Speedway. He ran 82 races from 2001-06, making seven starts last season.

Jesus Hernandez, Mike Johnson, Chase Austin, John Salemi and John Freeman rounded out the top 10. Point leader Joey Logano was 11th. Pole sitter Sean Caisse led the first 30 laps before being sidelined by mechanical problems and finished 24th.

Logano leads Olsen by 40 points (794-754) and Rogelio Lopez (737) by 57.

Kobyluck outruns Sellers at South Boston
South Boston, Va. – Matt Kobyluck put a early-season full of misfortune behind him, outrunning hometown favorite Peyton Sellers to win the South Boston 150 Saturday night in the fourth race of the NASCAR Grand National, Busch East season.

With the victory, Kobyluck earned an automatic spot in the season-ending Toyota All-Star Showdown in Irwindale (Calif.). Since that career high point, Kobyluck has had a run of bad luck.

Prior to Saturday, Kobyluck’s best finish of the season was a 12th in three Busch East starts and one West Series race. Twice, he crashed out while running in the top 5 – once with a flat tire and another when a pair of lapped cars spun in front of him.

Kobyluck’s biggest challenge at South Boston was Sellers, who was the track’s Late Model champion in 2005 en route to winning the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series title. Sellers also won the Busch Pole earlier in the day.

The two restarted on the front row four times over the last 50 laps. The first two times, they ran side-by-side for three laps with both drivers coming out on top once. However, on the final two restarts – with 10 to go, and again with four to go – Kobyluck got the jump on the restarts to take the lead.

Point leader Joey Logano and Marc Davis finished third and fourth, respectively. Rogelio Lopez was fifth. Jamie Hayes, Mike Olsen, Eric Holmes, Tim Schendel and Chase Austin rounded out the top 10.

Logano Feeling Grand
Sixteen-year-old Joey Logano followed up his NASCAR West Series win last week with a victory in the NASCAR Busch East Series opener Saturday at Greenville-Pickens Speedway. (Photo credit: Mike Keon).
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Sixteen-year-old Joey Logano swept to the win Saturday night at Greenville-Pickens Speedway, his second NASCAR Grand National victory in less than ten days.

Logano, of Middletown, Conn., held off Sean Caisse to win the NASCAR Busch East Series Greased Lightning 150. The victory comes on the heals of his NASCAR West Series season opening win at Phoenix International Raceway April 19. The West Series and Busch East Series wins were Logano’s first and second career NASCAR starts, respectively.

“I’m with one of the best teams out here,” said Logano of his Joe Gibbs Driven Chevrolet team. “They do their jobs, I do mine, and we’re just clicking right now.”

Logano, who set the track record at 87.481 mph qualifying, took the lead from defending race winner Caisse on lap 73. Bryon Chew of Mattituck, N.Y. was third followed by Peyton Sellers of Danville, Va., and Rogelio Lopez of Mexico City, Mexico.

Jeffrey Earnhardt, Mike Olsen, Michelle Theriault, John Freeman and John Townley rounded out the top 10.

The next race for the NASCAR Busch East Series is the Grand National Division combination race at Elko, Minn. May 18.
